Auf dem Meeresgrund, aus der Muschel Mund
brechen tapfre Taucher klare Perlen.
Klarer noch und tapferer
bricht aus dem Schlamm und durch den Schwamm
eine Perle aus Luft selber sich Bahn,
und aus derselben Gruft schlieβt eine zweite sich an.
Sie umtanzen sich, spielende, spiegelnde Blasen,
und schauen einer im anderen
ihr Widerbild unendlichfach.
Und um die Wette - die kurze Kette - schieβen sie hoch,
schreiben eine Schraube, die lichte Traube,
und fallen in die unendliche Kugel Luft,
und sind nur noch eine Perle wie diese.
Bald wird das Meer zum perlenden Wein,
schaue durch das Glas, wie sie emportanzen!
Alle wollen Dritte sein, alle werden es bald.
Denn diese Kette ist ohne Schnur,
sie schmückt nur den, der selber Kette ist;
und alle die Dritten sind des himmlischen Geschmeides
nie mehr zerreiβende Schlieβe.
